It has been over 20 years since the Fluvanna Christian Services Society (FCSS) founded Happy Face to help those in need in Fluvanna County. This month they kick-off their annual fundraising drive to make the holidays a little brighter for area children and their families. The program not only helps children but also seniors in need.
Kamille Shifflett, who helps head up the program, explained what Happy Face is all about.
“Every year the local churches raise money then pool that money to be used for Happy Face,” said Shifflett. Their annual event begins with a toy drive and residents donate gently used toys that can be cleaned and restored so that another child can enjoy them.
FCSS determines eligibility for the program by sending out invitations and getting responses. Those eligible need to respond by Nov. 15. The children’s party takes place the first Saturday in December.
This year it will take place on Dec. 7.
“Each child picks a toy and also gets a couple of books, a puzzle and a stuffed toy,” Shifflett said. “There is also a diaper table for new moms since this can be an expense for many young parents.” She added that usually 20-25 bikes are donated and any other larger toys are raffled off so all the children have a chance to win it.
They will also be giving out a $20 voucher to Family Dollar, Jefferson Pharmacy, and Fork Union Pharmacy. Seniors also get the voucher. Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church provides hand-crafted gifts.
Any funds left over from this year’s program are donated to the Monticello Area Community Action Agency (MACAA) and Bertha Armstrong, director of rural outreach, works with the treasurer to help residents in need throughout the year with rent, utility bills and more.
This year, the party for the children will feature a visit and photos with Santa, lots of goodies to eat and fun and games. There will be designated drop-off points for toys and anyone who would like to volunteer to set-up on Dec. 6 can contact Brian Orahood, pastor at the Lake Christian Church and director of FCSS, at 589-9280 or visit their website at www.lakchristianchurch.org. Volunteers must be 18 or older.
