The speed limit on Rt. 53 (Thomas Jefferson Parkway) near the new Fluvanna County High School will be lowered later this month as the school prepares to open to students on Aug. 13 for the new year.
A speed study done by the Virginia Department of Transportation recommended that the speed limit on Rt. 53 be lowered to 45 miles per hour from Rt. 660 (Ruritan Lake Road) to 0.2 miles east of the intersection with Rt. 721 (Pleasant Grove Drive) from the current 55 mph limit.
The new speed limit will be effective when the 45 mph signs are installed on July 14.
An additional variable speed zone will also be established in the immediate vicinity of the new school. Flashing beacons will indicate a 35 mile per hour speed limit during the morning arrival and afternoon dismissal times as motorists approach the school. That speed limit is in effect whenever the flashers are active. – Source: VDOT
