After meeting in closed session Wednesday (June 6), the Board of Supervisor voted 4 to 1 to adjust the salaries of several county employees and give out $16,500 in bonuses, said Chairman Shaun Kenney, (Columbia) the dissenting vote.
Kenney said he voted against the measure because he said it didn't seem right to cut the school budget then turn around and give county employees more money. "I think it sends the wrong message," Kenney said. "I can't do this in good conscience, but apparently I'm alone." Kenney said the salary adjustments seemed to go to those who "stepped up during the interim (since the Board fired five directors in March for giving themselves and some of their employees more money.)" Kenney said Economic Development Director Bobby Popowicz is one who got the salary adjustment.
At the meeting Steve Nichols introduced the new Planning Director, Allyson Finchum, to the Board. Finchum started working May 30. The new Parks and Recreation Director, Jason Smith will start work on June 13. Barbara Horlacher is the new Finance Director. Horlacher's first day will be June 18. - Ruthann Carr
