I want to applaud the Fluvanna Review editor, Carlos Santos, for his commitment to uphold the right of free speech for all under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution and refusing to cede free and open discourse to those who would censor opposition to their own version of the truth.

All sides of the current Fluco budget issue deserve to be heard in as many public forums as possible – including the informed and the uninformed – so that county residents can judge for themselves the merits of each viewpoint.

To suggest that an advertisement not be accepted on political grounds violates both the spirit and the intent of the Founders. To take issue with an advertisement, article or op-ed is to be encouraged! And those who take any author or group to task should do so with respect, integrity and the inclusion of factual, accurate data which supports their position.

To hold a newspaper responsible for the content of any item other than those written by paid staff, or to suggest that the publisher resort to censorship of any personal opinion or political perspective is simply un-American. Our students, our public education system and our county residents deserve far better.
