In January, Martha Jefferson Hospital opened an imaging center at Spring Creek near Zion Crossroads. No longer do people needing X-rays or mammograms have to drive all the way into Charlottesville, said Jennifer Sandy, marketing manager for medical imaging at MJH.
Even though the imaging center is located in the same building as a group of doctors, one doesn’t have to go to those doctors to use the imaging center.
“Anyone can refer here,” Sandy said. “Everyone needs a signed doctor’s order for the test, but they can just walk in.”
Besides being nearby, the imaging center also offers the convenience of being open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, even through lunch.
Add to that convenient parking and a location just off Rt. 15, Sandy said the turnaround time for someone walking through the door for an X-ray can be as little as 20 minutes.
Sue Kraus is the radiology technician who staffs the center. Even though the center just opened, she’s been busy and will be for the near future.
“All slots are full for the next two weeks,” Kraus said.
Everyone who’s come in for services have been happy with the location, Kraus said.
“Especially those who live at the Lake,” she said.
Kim Brice was at the center getting a chest X-ray and a routine mammogram.
Brice lives in Kents Store. Her doctor is in Charlottesville, so Brice was happy not to have to make another trip into town.
It’s not just the patients who benefit from the new location.
Debbie Brent, a patient access representative for MJH, has worked for the hospital for 28 years. She lives in Palmyra and commuted into Charlottesville. When she heard the center was opening at Spring Creek, Brent put in for a transfer.
“I love it,” she said. “I’m 15 minutes from home.”
The center has state-of-the-art, digital X-ray and mammography equipment. The pictures are sent digitally to the doctor and read by a radiologist, just as they are when taken at the hospital’s main campus.
